Kindle Unlimited free trial UK: is it worth it, and how to cancel
Short answer: Kindle Unlimited's standard UK free trial lasts 30 days, then costs £9.49 a month. It's worth it if you read two or more ebooks a month, and you don't need a Kindle to use it, because the free Kindle app works on any phone or tablet.
Amazon also runs cheaper offers a few times a year, and last Black Friday it was three months for 99p. If you've had a trial in the last 12 months, waiting for one of those is the smarter move. Details were last checked on 26 October 2026.
Kindle Unlimited: 30-day free trial (then £9.49 a month)
A month of unlimited borrowing for free. It renews automatically, so set a reminder for day 28 if you only want the trial. Amazon sometimes shows longer or cheaper offers when you sign in, so check before you start.
What you get with Kindle Unlimited
- Millions of ebooks, mostly genre fiction (thrillers, romance, fantasy, crime), plus some non-fiction and series favourites. You won't find most new bestsellers from the big publishers.
- Thousands of audiobooks. Many Kindle Unlimited books come with free Audible narration, marked with a headphones icon, so you can switch between reading and listening.
- Magazines, comics and manga, including titles like T3, Stuff and National Geographic Traveller.
- Up to 20 titles at a time, with no due dates. Return one to borrow another.
You can read on a Kindle, or on the free Kindle app for iPhone, Android, tablets and computers.
How much does Kindle Unlimited cost in the UK?
£9.49 a month after the trial. That's about the price of one or two Kindle ebooks, so it pays for itself if you read at least a couple of books a month that are in the catalogue. If you mostly read new releases, you're better off buying them.
Kindle Unlimited vs Prime Reading
If you already have Amazon Prime, you get Prime Reading at no extra cost. It's a much smaller, rotating selection of a few thousand books and magazines. Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription with a far bigger library. Try Prime Reading first if you're a Prime member; if you run out of things to read, Kindle Unlimited is the upgrade. Our Amazon Prime free trial guide explains how to get Prime free for 30 days.
When are the best Kindle Unlimited deals?
Amazon tends to run its cheapest offers around Prime Day in the summer, Black Friday and Christmas:
- Black Friday 2025: three months for 99p, ending 1 December.
- Christmas 2024: three months for 99p, running into early January.
- Prime Day 2024: three months free for Prime members.
These offers are usually for new members or people who haven't subscribed recently. If you're not in a hurry, Black Friday week (27 November to 30 November 2026) is a good time to check.
Can I get the Kindle Unlimited free trial more than once?
Usually not within 12 months. Amazon generally only offers the trial to accounts that haven't had one recently. Once it's been a year, you may be offered it again when you sign in.
How do I cancel Kindle Unlimited?
Go to Your Account > Memberships & Subscriptions on Amazon, choose Kindle Unlimited and cancel. You keep access until the end of the trial or the month you've paid for, then any borrowed books disappear from your devices. Deleting the Kindle app does not cancel it.
Do I need a Kindle to use Kindle Unlimited?
No. The free Kindle app works on phones, tablets and computers. A Kindle is nicer for long reading sessions, and our Kindle Black Friday deals guide shows when to buy one. New Kindles have sometimes come with a few months of Kindle Unlimited included.
Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?
It's good value if you read a lot of genre fiction or enjoy discovering new authors. It's poor value if you only read a few new bestsellers a year. The free trial is the easiest way to find out: browse the catalogue for books you actually want before you commit.
Are Kindle Unlimited audiobooks the same as Audible?
No. Only some Kindle Unlimited books include narration. For a full audiobook library, see our Audible free trial guide.
